Paul Verhoeven’s cult science fiction film TOTAL RECALL (1990) returns to Belgian theaters in a great 4K version that has been digitally restored from November 18th. This US box office hit, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sharon Stone, was one of the most expensive films ever made when it was released.
Planet Earth, 2048. Haunted by a nightmare that drags him to Mars every night, Doug Quaid turns to a laboratory, Rekall, who offers him the opportunity to use a powerful hallucinogen to make his dream come true. But the experience gets out of hand …
Paul Verhoeven is gory social criticism and deliciously sarcastic humor (“Think of this as a divorce!”). With Sharon Stone as Schwarzenegger’s wife, who leads a double life, and Michael Ironside as the delicious villain Richter. In addition to this incredible cast, Paul Verhoeven, the director, had already achieved great success with Robocop in Hollywood a few years earlier. The film was well received by critics when it was released. The great soundtrack comes from Jerry Goldsmith (Chinatown, Star Trek, Planet of the Apes).
TOTAL RECALL is inspired by the short story “We can remember it for you at the wholesale trade” by Philip K. Dick, whose inspiration also served as the basis for the other cult science fiction film Blade Runner (Ridley Scott, 1982). Co-authors Ronald Shusett and Dan O’Bannon previously wrote Alien.
During the 4K restoration of the original 35mm negative, special attention was paid to the continuity of the special effects. Total Recall was one of the first computer graphics films to win the 1991 Oscar for visual effects. The original soundtrack, composed by Jerry Goldsmith, has also benefited greatly from digital restoration in Dolby Atmos.
Paul Verhoeven on the restoration: “I just saw the 4K presentation of my film and it is absolutely amazing what Studiocanal and the restoration team have done. They see so much detail it feels three-dimensional. Well done!” “
The new edition of TOTAL RECALL is part of the collaboration between Lumière and the Eye Filmmuseum in Amsterdam. The Eye Filmmuseum in Amsterdam will present an extensive program about Paul Verhoeven in 2021.
