The American film and theater actor Thomas Jefferson Byrd, who has worked in several films by director Spike Lee, was shot dead in Atlanta last weekend, according to police. Mr Byrd was found on the street Saturday night with multiple gunshot wounds to his back. Emergency services were able to resuscitate him, but the 70-year-old man died shortly afterwards.
The actor has appeared in Spike Lee’s films and series, including He Got Game, Set It Off and The Very Black Show. In addition, Byrd starred in the Oscar-nominated film “Ray”. He also played a role in the 2017 Netflix series “Nola Darling Goes Like It” directed by Lee. The man was also successful in the theater: in 2003 he won a Tony Award for his role in “My Rainey’s Black Bottom”.
Spike Lee responded sadly to the news: “It is with great sadness that I have to announce that our beloved Thomas Jefferson Byrd was murdered in Atlanta,” he said. (Belga / Belga)
