Sue Perkins has revealed that she was recently broken into tears by a man who homophobically mistreated her on Hampstead Heath, London.
The old Great British cuisine Hosts and diverse national treasures were reminiscent of the creepy moment during an appearance on the homo sapiens Podcast.
“I recently had my first homophobic abuse in 20 years,” she told host Alan Cumming. “And I was like, ‘Oh, I wonder if this is coming back?'”
Perkins, 51, said she was walking her dog on the public moor when she passed a man with “reactor-shaped glasses” hanging near the men’s bathroom.
Presumably the man recognized the celebrity and spat out the homophobic insult: “You damn dyke.
“You know, when something bad happens and you’re on the bus on your way home, do you think about all the brilliant things you should have said back then?” I had that very deep, ”said Perkins.
“At the time I went to him and said, ‘What did you say? And he posted a bit like hitting me, almost as a hint of something physical.
Despite fearing for her safety, Perkins maintained her composure and asked the man again to repeat what he had told her.
“I just thought I would stay here. And very calmly I said, “What did you say? I remember that my hand was outstretched – I wanted to keep this distance as if you were at a distance. I know something really bad is going to happen.
“He just bent down a little and said, ‘I just want to say that you have a pretty face, why do you want …’ I just thought, ‘What has my face got to do with you?'”
Perkins made sure the man knew the effect of his words.
“I just said, ‘I’m going for a walk my dog and I’m calm and I’m in a good mood and I have love for everyone here and you destroyed that and you can’t take it back today.” . And I went and burst into tears. It was so shocking and unusual.
She revealed that “decades” had passed since their last homophobic encounter, but as shaken as she was, she was determined not to bow to the man’s level.
“The worst of me was, ‘If someone wants to judge someone by what they’re doing and where they’re at …” she laughed, pointing to Hampstead Heath’s reputation as a popular gay cruise ship.
“But I didn’t want to replace reflex badness with reflex badness.
