Lovers rock records an underground London blues party, a place where Black Brits could break loose and dance safe from white harassment. Director Steve McQueen presents the house party as a mostly utopian place, cared for and monitored by a community devoted to the ideals of spiritual liberation. The fluid, hand-held camera work of the film, courtesy of Shabier Kirchner, puts the positive mood in the foreground, shows every inch of the narrow dance floor and basks in the glow of carefree joy. These gatherings represent liberation from a socially and politically marginalized group, but this subtext just pulsates underneath Lovers rockcontextualize the movie without ever overwhelming it.
