It was the first television duel in the race for the White House – and in the end horror wins. The committee responsible now wants to set new rules for the next meeting.
The US presidential candidate Joe Biden hit his opponent hard after the first television duel with the incumbent Donald Trump. The Republican’s appearance, which kept interrupting him during the televised debate, was a “national embarrassment,” Biden said during a visit to Alliance in Ohio.
The committee responsible for organizing the presidential debates has announced changes to the rules for the next meeting of opponents. “Last night’s debate made it clear that the format of the remaining debates needs to be expanded to include additional structures to ensure a more orderly discussion of the issues,” said the Commission. “Additional tools are planned to keep order,” he said. The rule changes would be “carefully” examined and announced shortly.
The first televised presidential debate between Republican Trump and his opposition Democrat challenger was utterly chaotic. The President kept interrupting Biden and trying to drown him. The former vice president responded with strong counterattacks and once asked the outgoing president to “shut up”. Conservative Fox News host Chris Wallace failed to arrest the president.
“Worst Debate in Living Memory”
Observers responded with strong criticism of the drama. “It was the most chaotic and harassed presidential debate in our history,” said Mitchell McKinney, a political scientist at the University of Missouri and an expert on presidential debates. The Washington Post wrote that it was “the worst presidential debate in living memory.” The CNN news channel spoke of a “debacle”.
The show was badly received by voters: 69% said in a quick poll conducted by the broadcaster CBS that the argument had mostly upset them. Biden accused Republican Trump of voicing doubts about the legitimacy of the elections and denounced that he sent the wrong signal to a right-wing group called the Proud Boys. During the debate, Trump declined to condemn right-wing groups, saying, “Proud boys – hold back and be ready. Regarding the group, Biden said, “That’s not who we are as Americans.” The moderator’s question was whether Trump would be willing to explicitly condemn groups and militias across the spectrum of “white supremacy” whose views include white superiority.
Trump and Biden will face each other in two more television debates on October 15 and 22 ahead of the elections. The televised duel between Vice Presidential candidates Mike Pence and Kamala Harris will take place next Wednesday.
