If Elon Musk is best known as the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, the 49-year-old heads many other companies, including Neuralink, which is increasingly talked about. Neuralink is described as an American neurotechnology startup that develops brain implants with direct neural interfaces. A few weeks ago Elon Musk compared this implant to a Fitbit built into your skull.
A disturbing sight, but interesting.
Musk and his teams are currently testing this famous implant on pigs. In an interview with the New York Times, Elon Musk explains that this project aims to significantly improve communication between the brain and the computer. Here are its terms: “We are a 300 baud modem. We deliver information to our phone very slowly or possibly a little faster if you use 10 fingers. And it’s just very difficult to communicate. The AI will move away from us just because it can’t talk to us. ” Scary isn’t it? However, Elon Musk believes that we are so dependent on our phones, computers, and social media that adding a Neuralink chip to our brain shouldn’t change much for humanity. With that in mind, I recommend watching the documentary Behind Our Smoke Grids, which is currently available on Netflix.
Elon Musk still wants to reassure us by stating that the project is still at a very early stage. This implant has yet to be validated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). For this purpose, the product must not cause any undesirable effects and must be easily removable.
In a first step, the Neuralink implant should be marketed as a medical product. Indeed, the teams involved in the project are trying to find a solution to treat lesions of the brain and spinal cord. But remember, Coca-Cola also comes from a drug store. In the long term, Elon Musk envisions making this implant available to everyone to improve our relationships with artificial intelligences.
