We knew everything about him, he was just made official by Google. After several months of leaks, the 2020 Chromecast version will be launched.
With most of the qualities of the previous models, it offers a completely different and much more intense experience.
Android TV is dead, long live Google TV
If you’re not familiar with Chromecast, these little dongles plug into your HDMI port and allow you to stream content from your smartphone (among other things). This new Chromecast has the same format and features and adds a full operating system: Google TV.
With the successor to Android TV, you can install your favorite applications to enjoy right on your TV. Google TV is a completely redesigned version that was designed for help you find the right content at the right time. You no longer have to navigate specifically through the individual apps to find your content. Starting a search will scan all of your favorite services (Netflix, YouTube, Prime Video, MyCanal, etc.) and Google TV will show you the most relevant results. Then you can add them to your “watch list” with one click.
This is a very different experience than previous Chromecasts where everything had to be controlled from the smartphone. The biggest competitor to this new Chromecast seems to be the Mi TV Stick from Xiaomi, which sells at € 20 cheaper (€ 49 versus € 69).
A voice remote control
Another novelty of the Chromecast 2020 is its remote control. It has a built-in microphone so you can use your voice to control Google TV and any device compatible with the Google Assistant. The user interface also helps you find ideas. Imagine an action movie, just ask, and Google TV will give you titles of content to watch.
Google TV is launched exclusively for this new Chromecast and will be available on competing set-top boxes (Nvidia Shield, Mi TV Stick, etc.) in the coming months. Tech-wise, Chromecast lets you stream 4K HDR at 60 frames per second. This is Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos compatible.
Only one thing is missing: stadiums
The only downside to this new Chromecast compared to the Chromecast Ultra, Stadia, is not currently supported. It’s a shame a product that offers exclusivity with Google TV doesn’t support the internal cloud gaming platform. We asked the brand during the press conference that they would have to wait until next year to play your new Chromecast with Stadia.
The new Chromecast is available for € 69.99 in the three colors Aurora, Snow and Sky. With the integration of Google TV and its mini format, it is a perfect product if you want to enjoy your multimedia content anywhere, as long as you have access to a WiFi connection.
