McLaren is at a crossroads. But before the British dare to make a fresh start, they will bundle their strengths again and crown their Super Series with a new long-tail model. It’s so hot it literally breathes fire that some competitors might burn.
The McLaren F1 was the king of the fast lane and the “longtail” was its coronation. Because no other super sports car of the 90s was as crisp and fast as the hardcore version for the LeMans and the homologated Street Twin. That was almost 30 years ago and the British have carried on this legend for some time: first with the 675 LT from 2015, then with the 600 LT from last year and now with the 765 LT sold in October at prices of 326,560. The euro is on sale.
Not only is it by far the strongest and fastest long tail, including the original from the 90s. Above all, it is something like the condensate of what McLaren has achieved so far. Because shortly before a new era begins, the British will hopefully crown the existing platform as “best of” with a new carbon chassis, the first hybrid engine and enough fresh money. And with it the so-called Super Series. Even the popular 720S, which serves as the basis for the longtail, looks almost tame and peaceful in direct comparison.
Pinch me! I think I am dreaming
But there is also much more than the powerfully sharp design and increased output of the 720-765 hp 4.0-liter turbo V8 that make the difference here. The long tail weighs 80 pounds less than the already thin 720S, each tendon is stretched to burst, and the senses are as sharp as a predator before attack.
And there’s a lot to feel: when the start button illuminates the 4.0-liter V8 in the neck, the driver’s nerves are tense and all senses are sharpened. Because when 765 HP and up to 800 Newton meters throw the flyweight of a little more than 1.2 tons towards the horizon, an adrenaline rush flows through your body. And because 100 km / h are reached after just 2.8 seconds, the cerebellum is already sinking there. So you’re in a frenzy when the McLaren continues to gain momentum, crosses the 200 mark after a breathless 7.0 seconds and continues to storm until you lose. Your courage, your morale always wins or you surpass them. 330 km / h reached. Pinch me! I think I am dreaming
On the way to purgatory
Although the long tail literally sends the competition from Ferrari & Co into purgatory with the flames that occasionally beat out of the four titanium tailpipes: You don’t have to be a tamer to turn off the car, because without any luck like Ferrari 488 Pista or Lamborghini Aventador SVJ, on the other hand, are to be dominated. On the contrary: perfectly coordinated and equipped with impressively precise steering, you can still drive the 765 LT with your little finger if you have the knife between your teeth for a long time.
Only if, in the drastically reduced cockpit, you set both the handling and drive train switches to track mode and switch off the now three-stage ESP, you should perhaps better keep both hands on the steering wheel. . Because even 25% more downforce, the tires with the adhesive force of Pattex and the brakes of the crazy Senna can only prevent you from taking off at some point.
The big drama is missing
As spectacular as the driving performance is and as unbridled as the McLaren indulges in the charm of the lawn, the Langtail does not have the great drama that other sports cars make with so much power and speed. It’s loud, but it doesn’t make any noise. He has brute strength but not a brutal character. And for all his potency, he’s not a testosterone-soaked poseur built just for appearances. Instead, despite the narrow carbon shells, the lower equipment position and the noticeably stiffened chassis, it offers enough residual comfort for long transfers between circuits and is indeed an everyday type. A Ferrari, on the other hand, is a classy diva and a Lamborghini is a bitchy rage. The McLaren, on the other hand, is a pro in itself: brave, cool and predictable, but charming and heartwarming.
For the British, this is not only a deep start, but also a perfect performance. That’s why not only the engineers sharpened the long tail. The designers have also returned and redesigned the 720S, particularly in the part that other road users will see most often: the rear end. The engine is now installed under a new bonnet with eye-catching cooling holes, the rear apron consists almost entirely of thin perforated sheet metal and the four blue titanium paper clips shine towards you from the open construction.
There will never be another
There is also a window, which is illuminated as an absolute highlight and through which the view from the driver’s shoulder falls directly onto the engine. With the exception of the larger nine-millimeter spoiler, the long tail didn’t get any longer. Because the almost two inches that make the difference and justify the name can only be traced back to the new front splitter, which protrudes from the bow like the knife of a lawnmower.
The longtail is an extremely expensive offer with a base price of 326,560 euros. But money shouldn’t be a factor in this fun. Because the 765 copies that McLaren wants to build from the longtail have almost all been sold. And even if the British survive the crisis halfway safely, there will certainly no longer be such a car on the new chassis and with the new hybrid drive.
